Ted Crews was promoted to Executive Vice President of Communications on April 22, 2021 after originally joining the franchise as the Vice President of Communications on Jan. 27, 2012. He begins his 12th season with the Chiefs in 2023.
Crews serves as the club’s primary contact and spokesman for the team’s communications efforts for both football and business operations, and is the club’s key liaison between coaches, players, team executives and local, national and international media members. He oversees a staff that also works directly with the coaching and personnel departments on research, statistics and other miscellaneous projects. During his time with the Chiefs, Crews has played a critical role in helping the club transition to new coaching and personnel staffs.
Crews is responsible for media scheduling, preparation and speech writing for all facets of the organization, working closely with Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, Head Coach Andy Reid, General Manager Brett Veach, President Mark Donovan and the club’s key players to unify messaging and problem solve.
Crews and his team navigated through one of the most unique and challenging media landscapes in NFL history in 2020, adapting to COVID safety measures while still providing regular access to the club’s players, coaches and executives to promote the brand during the team’s second- consecutive Super Bowl appearance. In addition, the team’s credential application processes were updated and protocols were established to successfully host media in the stadium and press box on gameday.
In 2014, Crews oversaw the development of a corporate communications department designed to better serve the needs of the club’s business operations. Working closely with Donovan, Crews implemented a strategy that focused on media preparation, publicity and messaging support for all departments in the building on both the local and national levels.
This work includes supporting the communications efforts of the team’s marketing, outreach and partnership staffs, as well as Arrowhead Events – the club’s special events arm which brings concerts, college football, motorsports, festivals and other special events to the stadium.
Crews and his staff have had significant roles in the communication strategies around the partnership announcement for GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium as well as Chiefs Fit, the club’s new multi-location fitness center concept.
Entering his 24th season in the National Football League, Crews has been invited by the NFL 10 times to serve as a captain on the league’s Super Bowl public relations staff (XLIX, XLIV, XLV, XLVI, XLVII, XLVIII, XLIX, 50, LI, LII) and has also been invited to work a number of Pro Bowls. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 prior to the Super Bowl, the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation has honored Crews at the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Salute to Excellence Awards Ceremony for his outstanding work and success as an African American in an executive position in the NFL. He was named to the inaugural Executive Board for the Fritz Pollard Alliance in 2021.
A graduate of South Carolina State, Crews was recognized in March of 2014 with one of the school’s highest honors as he was selected to receive the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award. In 2013, he was named one of the first 20 people honored as part of the Who’s Who in Black Kansas City. He now serves on the Who’s Who Advisory Council Board and reviews future selections.
Prior to joining the Chiefs, Crews spent three seasons (2009-11) as Senior Director of Communications for the St. Louis Rams. In that capacity, he served as the primary contact on all football matters for the owners, general manager and head coach, in addition to serving as the team’s official spokesperson.
